The San Antonio Express-News needs the facts -– concert ticket info, club and band calendars, promo material, event schedules & festival details in print form. This information must be faxed, hand-delivered, mailed or emailed to us far in advance of deadlines – no exceptions. The more information we have - including contact telephone numbers -- and the more lead time allowed, the better job we can do. We don't expect local bands to necessarily have high-powered media reps behind them cranking out press releases and promo packs. Complete information however, doesn't cost much and doesn't have to be slick to be effective.
PHOTOS: We prefer, for columns and daily stories, 8X10 black and white glossies, though 5x7 will work. Keep in mind that photographic quality and available space, not writers, usually determine what photos run. With the internet we can now download if suitable artwork (jpgs) is available at a band or record label website. Jpgs can also be emailed to individual reporters or editors.
DEADLINES: Are of the utmost importance. Sufficient lead time is always necessary. Space in the newspaper is tight and getting tighter. We don't often find ourselves sitting around waiting for something about which to write, so the sooner we get the info, the sooner we can get it into the process.
TEAR SHEETS: We don't often have time to send out tear sheets but if people are willing to send in SASE or labels -- the easier it is to respond.
