Ramiro Herrera, one of the best romantic balladeers in Tex-Mex, headlines the 2008 Blessed Sacrament Halloween celebraiton.

The family festival will also feature a performance by the Horizon Band. Food and game booths, silent auction and more. Church grounds, 600 Oblate at Shannon Lee. Free admission. 5-11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24. (210) 824-3381

As a veteran of the music business, Herrera has through the years emegred as one of the top singers. There may be betters singers in different styles, say Jay Perez or David Marez in Tejano/R&B growlers or Joe Lopez may shine the best on rancheras,.

But when it comes to ballads, Herrera is the one of the best.

Among his best tunes are his rendition of Juan Luis Guerra's "Bachata Rosa," or his tuneful reading of the Delaney & Bonnie's "Never Ending Song of Love."

His CD "Conmigo," also had some gems including a reworking his 1987 hit "Entre Cantina y Cantina" as a Mariachi Los Caporales-fueled ranchera version. This Roger Contreras-written song is about a poor soul going from bar to bar trying to drown his sorrows and the memories of that special babe that got away. Herrera digs deep to find a new poignancy in his phrasing.

Then there's the "Reina De Mi Amor," an old evergreen first identified with Sunny Ozuna in the '70s. Here producer Gilbert Velasquez orchestrates the studio pros, which include accordionist Frankie Caballero, drummers Chente Barrera, and the late keyboardist Jerry de La Rosa, to create truly an inspired work. Mixing emotions of fear, pride, and longing, Herrera and crew fashion a gorgeous polka, fueled by muscular rhythms and affecting moods.
