Tejano Conjunto Festival 2009: big names, new talents
Conjunto legends Esteban Jordan, Mingo Saldivar, and Ruben Vela are among the headliners for the upcoming 28th annual Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio.
The festival, which is scheduled May 5-9, kicks off at
the historic Guadalupe Theatre, 1301 Guadalupe St. at S. Brazos, and continues at the nearby Rosedale Park, 342 Dartmouth.
On Thursday at 10 a.m., TCF officials will have the official poster unveiling in a small ceremony at the Guadalupe Theater that will feature performances by Mingo Saldivar, Eva Ybarra and Bene Medina.
The poster design was created by Rigoberto Luna - the Winner in the Overall Category of the 28th Tejano Conjunto Festival Poster Contest. Luna will also receive a $1,000 cash award. The poster will become a part of the fabric of San Antonioâ€™s rich history at The Guadalupe.
Ruben Vela's latest CD is "Los Melones' oin the new Latin World record label owned by Tino Saenz. Also on theÂ labelÂ isÂ Ricky G y Los Gamblers whose new CD is titledÂ "Viviendo del Recuerdo."
Additional performers include Oscar Hernandez, Los Dos Gilbertos, Ricky Naranjo y Los Gamblers, and Sunny Sauceda. A unique highlight this year is a special Tribute to Esteban Jordan, who through the past four decades has emerged as one of the most influentialÂ accordionists in the history of conjunto music.
There will also be accordion workshops taught by conjunto accordion great, Oscar Hernandez. He will also teach a workshop in Accordion Maintenance, Tuning and Repair. Bajo sexto will be taught by legendary musician and bajista, Jesus â€śChuchoâ€ť Perales. Workshop prices range from $35 per session or $50 per day (two sessions).
Tickets at Rosedale Park range $12 to $15 per day. Pre-sale three-day passes are $25 for GCAC members, $30 for non-GCAC members; on-site three-day passes are $30 for GCAC members, $35 for non-GCAC members.
Additional festival features includes inductions into the Conjunto Music Hall of Fame; a Seniors Conjunto Dance; and a CD Release Party at the Guadalupe Theater for The Best of the 8th and 27th Tejano Conjunto Festivals (recorded live at the 1989 and 2008 festivals respectively).
The family festival will also feature food and beverage booths, accordion raffle, student recital and more.
