TMA 2009: Familiar faces among winners 

Veterans and other familiar artists were among the 2009 Tejano Music Awards winners during ceremonies held Friday at Villita Assembly Building.

Jimmy González y Grupo Mazz took Song of the year for "Retrato Quebrado" and also Group Album. Meanwhile, Conjunto Album went to Garcia Brothers for  "Hombre De Ti."

A full house attended the award ceremonies held Friday at Villita Assembly Building. The complete list of winners follows below.

More than a half dozen artists performed Friday including AJ Castillo, Ruben Ramos, Shelly Lares, Elida Reyna, Fama, Gary Hobbs, Jay Perez and Jimmy Gonzalez & Mazz.

The lifetime Achievement award was presented to Joe Bravo and Augustin Ramirez.

Classic Tejano lost another hero recently when pioneer Ramiro "Snowball" de la Cruz passed away of a heart attack.

De La Cruz, 68, died May 20 in McAllen.

Many fans may recall De La Cruz as heading the band Snowball and Co which backed up another pioneer – Laura Canales in her early career. Canales had originally begun her career with Los Unicos and followed with a short stint with El Conjunto Bernal before joining Snowball.
