Jorge Moreno has the best of two worlds Pt II

Jorge Moreno is one of those versatile artist who is just as comfortable singing in Spanish as he is in English. He also switches easily from country and classics to boleros, cumbias and polkas. Our correspondent Ramon Hernandez has a chance to visit with Moreno in this report, Part II of II.

His second CD, “In Love in Texas,” is actually a re-release

of his first effort, but on Jorge Flores’ GSM label. This came about after Moreno’s entry on why he should be chosen won the 2007 Tejano Music Convention Makeover Contest and Grand Giveaway in Las Vegas.

The West Coast Tejano’s most recent production, “The Best of Both Worlds,” was released on Maddox Records in 2009, which he named after his firstborn, Maddox George Moreno.

As for live performances as Jorge Moreno and His Band (initially Experencia), he says, “I am an ongoing crossover artist because I never use all the same musicians for any weekend gig. I’ve never had a solid, consistent band because I quickly learned how hard it is to maintain the same musicians. I always piece a band together.

“Besides, each time I put a show, I tailor fit the band to the venue and audience. So I hired musicians from rock bands for a repertoire of 1980s rock in which we do Foreigner, REO Speedwagon and Journey; or rock musicians when I’m performing at a country fair. And sometimes, when dealing with Anglo promoters, I hire all gabachos.

“This is where education comes in. In addition, I ask the questions many artists don’t. I, on the other hand, like to get involved in the business. While it may be too much homework for others, for me, its part of the business,” the Cal State University grad explained.

While many bands knocked themselves out with three and four grueling low to medium paying gigs per week, Moreno says, “I average two gigs a month by choice. However, I concentrate on high profile events versus playing at local venues.

“This gives me the time to promote ‘No Le Den Tequila’ – don’t give her tequila because
