In making the announcement, the Latin Recording Academy® noted that Estefan was selected for her philanthropic, cultural and professional accomplishments. Estefan will receive the honor at a star-studded concert and tribute dinner on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008, at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston. In keeping with Grammy tradition, a portion of the proceeds from the tribute dinner will benefit the singer's designated charities - the Gloria Estefan Foundation as well as St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

GrammyLogolga_mark_v1_rgb1.jpgThe dinner precedes the 9th Annual Latin Grammy awards, which are being held in Houston for the first time. The awards are scheduled Nov.13 at the Toyota Center and will be broadcast live on the Univision Television Network at 8 p.m.

For more than three decades, Estefan has been a familiar face in the pop and Latino world. In the late '70s, Estefan began her career with the Miami Latin Boys band, later known known as Miami Sound Machine. Since then she has recorded 22 albums and sold more than 90 million records. Her hit singles include "Bad Boy," "Words Get In The Way" and "Conga."

Estefan is also being recognized for her charity work. Her philanthrophy includes the Gloria Estefan Foundation, which aims to promote good health, education and cultural development. One of the main benefactors of the Gloria Estefan Foundation is the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis -- the leading research center for spinal cord injuries. Estefan served as chairwoman for a capital campaign that raised more than 40 million dollars to build the Lois Pope Life Center neurological research facility.

Estefan is the ninth Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year honoree and is the first woman to receive the honor. She joins a prestigious list of previous honorees, which includes Julio Iglesias, Ricky Martin, and Carlos Santana.
